1 By the beginning of August 1996 we decided to replace the roof. We got a heap of quotes to do the roof, but the cheapest bid came in around $5500-00.
We got prices for the materials and decided we could do it ourselves. Little did we know what we were getting into.
2 We had finished tearing off the old shingles from the back of the house. We removed 2 layers of cedar and 1 layer of asphalt shingles.
If you look closely at the top of the roof, you can see a slight bow from all of the weight that had been there.
3 Believe it or not, this is only one third of the shingles from the back 1/2 of the house. The worst part of the job was the clean up.
We had a neighbors friend who used to be a roofer, come over and help put on the new roof. This way we were assured that we would have no leaks.
4 And voila ..... the finished product.
Ruth was so concerned that I would hurt myself replacing the roof. Ironically, the roofer, Steve Smylie, on his first day on the job decided that he had too much thumb and promptly, near, cut it off.
